TWELVE

They waited until sundown to venture out.

Oliver guided Ava and Roscoe down side streets and through pretty back alleys full of quaint residential homes near the Riverwalk. He took her to a squatty little food trailer called The Taco Truck. It was brightly colored and tucked back in a secluded shopping area underneath towering oaks and ancient magnolias.

“How do you know your way around?” she asked, after they’d had some of the best tacos she’d ever eaten. She marveled at how Oliver made sure they blended in with other groups out on the street and along the winding paths of the Riverwalk. Marveled also at how he seemed to have ignored her concerns regarding the obvious guilt eating away at his soul. Ava knew all about that kind of guilt. It could cripple a person and ruin any chances of having a solid relationship.

“I jog a lot,” he admitted, holding her hand and always keeping her near the buildings instead of the street. “After Madison died I walked a lot at night. Wound up once at this old church. I’ll show it to you. It’s not far from here.”

A church.

Ava followed him in a zigzag through the city, taking in the blend of new and old that made San Antonio so unique. They came to a neighborhood of Spanish Eclectic homes built around the 1920s. Ava had read up on the city when she’d first come to Canyon, but she rarely made it into the downtown area. It had been over a year since she’d come to the Riverwalk for a night out with friends.

Now she was using this historical place as a cover from a killer.

But when Oliver stopped in front of a quaint Spanish-style creamy stone chapel, Ava took in a breath and stared up at the jutting steeple. For a moment, she forgot why she was standing here and allowed the beauty of the place to settle over her bones.

“Is this the church, Oliver? Is this your special place?”

He slowed to a stop under a giant oak tree. “Yes. This is where I turned back to God and vowed to turn my life around.” Then he took her hand and held it tight. “This is how I’ll find my way back, Ava. I don’t want it to be too late. I want it to be right. Tell me you get that.”

“I do,” she said. “I’m trying, Oliver. I... I lost someone, too. So we’ve both been fighting our way out of the wilderness.”

“Yes, we have. It’s hard. But I need you to keep fighting, okay?”

Ava gave him a weak nod. “Okay.” She glanced up at the tiny church. “It’s beautiful. Why don’t we go inside?”

* * *

Oliver looked into her eyes and saw that she really wanted to understand him, saw that her faith ran deep and fierce. Glad that she felt the same way he did about this little chapel, he smiled over at her.

“Sure. We could do that,” he said, his heart thumping against his shirt in a fast beat.
